MEREWETHER HEIGHTS | A careful balance between built and natural forms

A collaboration with Bourne and Blue Architecture, the design brief was to create a connection between the inside and outside living areas, to capture the views and focal points from within the home and to make a link to the pool and outdoor seating. This project, situated in Merewether Heights and moments away from Glenrock State Conservation area was considered within the wider context to ensure a continuity in plant selection and habitat corridors were achieved. The result is a combination of coastal and low maintenance planting with many endemic species suited to the location, inviting an array of bird and insect life to the garden. As they establish, they will create height through dynamic layers of vegetation, balancing the scale of the architecture and connecting the house to the wider landscape.

Many of the plants in this project are discussed in our Newcastle Planting Guide, where we offer our thoughts on the best plants to choose for some of the harsher coastal environments found along Newcastle’s coastline, while still achieving a balance between colour, texture and form.
