WANGI WANGI | Transforming this sloping Lake Macquarie back garden into an inviting and useable space

Wangi Wangi is known for it’s glistening lake vistas and peaceful bushland seclusion, it’s also known for it’s steep slopes and often tricky sites. Liminal were engaged to transform this difficult block into a garden that could be enjoyed from all views from the house, capitalising on the bushland backdrop, with multiple areas to soak up the peace and quiet and with plenty of room for a family of 5 to enjoy.

The escarpment dropped off steeply towards the rear of the property limiting access and making the back garden complicated to maintain. The architecture of the new renovations was orientated to interact with the landscape, making the intersection of architecture, material and planting a key consideration of this design.

A series of carefully considered retaining walls allowed an open level lawn area to be achieved, creating the perfect spot for the kids to play with a seating area off the alfresco for the adults to sit back and sip a coffee. It also enabled the incorporation of veggie beds, with soft, low native planting blending the back garden gradually into the bushland beyond. A series of steps and levels lead you down to a private, gravel seating area with a firepit to be enjoyed in the cooler winter months. Perched on the hill, the seating area becomes a tree-top oasis to enjoy the bush and unwind to the sound of birdsong.

Steep sites can often feel daunting but they also invite greater opportunity for creative use of space and should never be written off. Contact us to schedule your consultation where we can discuss how to get the most out of your space. Or, click here to see some of our other projects.
